Deliberate Practice for Therapists

Sharpen your technique between sessions.

Practice with AI-simulated clients who have real defense mechanisms, nonverbal cues, and resistance patterns. Get structured feedback on your technique grounded in deliberate practice methodology.

Built on deliberate practice methodology. The evidence-based training framework shown to outperform traditional clinical education in randomized controlled trials.

Built for LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, and clinical psychologists.

Choose your practice format

Two ways to practice, each designed to build different aspects of clinical competence.

Full Session Mode

  • Conduct a realistic 30–50 minute therapy session with an AI client
  • Client has a detailed backstory, defense mechanisms, and nonverbal cues
  • Post-session feedback report evaluates your technique against your chosen modality
  • Click any exchange to see what was happening inside the client

Skill Drill Mode

  • Deliberate practice mechanics: attempt a clinical moment, get scored feedback, retry with adjusted difficulty, track your progression
  • Focused repetition on a single skill. Immediate expert-level feedback. Adaptive challenge that keeps you at your learning edge.
  • Difficulty adjusts in real time. Harder when you score well, easier when you struggle. No coasting, no drowning.
  • 35+ skills across reflective listening, responding to resistance, silence handling, nonverbal awareness, and modality-specific technique
  • Session summaries show patterns across attempts. Recommendations for what to practice next.

What makes this different

The simulation is designed to feel like real clinical work, not a chatbot playing pretend.

Structured methodology, not a sandbox

You don't build the evaluation criteria. We built them, grounded in evidence-based modality frameworks. Every session and drill is scored against clinically precise rubrics, not generic AI feedback.

Clients who don't have breakthroughs from one good question

The AI is explicitly designed to resist resolution. Defense mechanisms persist. Avoidance patterns are entrenched. The simulation trains you for the real work, not the idealized version.

Nonverbal cues that sometimes contradict what the client says

Bracketed body language in every response. Crossed arms, broken eye contact, tears welling up. A client who says "I'm fine" while clenching their jaw is giving you a clinical signal. Practice reading it.

Silence that means something

The client can go quiet. Processing, shutting down, or refusing to engage. You decide: wait or intervene? The feedback report evaluates how you handled it.

Feedback from inside the client's head

After the session, click any exchange and see what the client was actually thinking, feeling, and withholding at that moment. It's like having a supervisor who can read your client's mind.

Meet the clients

15 curated clients ages 15 to 72, each with layered defense mechanisms, unique resistance styles, and backstories deep enough to sustain months of practice.

Marcus, 34

IT project manager. Wife encouraged him to come for escalating anxiety and irritability at work.

Cooperative → Guarded

Elena, 28

Graduate student. Panic attacks after a breakup, declining academic performance.

Expressive → Emotionally flooded

Doug, 52

Retired military. Court-mandated anger management after a road rage incident.

Resistant → Hostile

15 curated clients to start with, spanning adolescent trauma, anticipatory grief, perinatal depression, borderline features, somatic presentations, late-diagnosed neurodivergence, and more. Each one has a layered defense structure and a distinct clinical challenge. Need something specific? Describe a client in a few sentences and the platform builds a complete profile with the same depth. Full backstory, defense mechanisms, nonverbal cues, and resistance patterns. Not a thin template. A real clinical profile you can practice with for weeks.

Supported modalities

Each modality has its own session structure guidance and feedback rubric. The platform evaluates your technique against the framework you're practicing.

Frequently asked questions

Is the AI client realistic?
Each client has a layered clinical profile: a backstory, defense mechanisms, attachment patterns, and nonverbal behaviors. The system is designed to prevent the AI from being unrealistically cooperative or having sudden breakthroughs. Resistance and avoidance patterns persist across the session, just like they do in real clinical work.
I'm not sure about AI in therapy training. Is this clinically sound?
That’s a fair concern. Limina is built on deliberate practice methodology, the same evidence-based framework used in expertise research across medicine, music, and athletics, and increasingly adopted in psychotherapy training programs. The goal isn’t to replace supervision or real client work. It’s structured skill rehearsal with immediate, modality-specific feedback. Clinical advisors review all curated content.
Is my session data private?
All data is encrypted at rest and in transit. Sessions are simulated No real patient data is ever involved. We have a clear privacy policy and never use your session data to train AI models.
What modalities are supported?
Currently: CBT, Motivational Interviewing, Person-Centered Therapy, and Psychodynamic Therapy. Each modality has its own session structure guidance and feedback rubric. More are on the way.
Can I create my own client scenarios?
Yes. Describe a client in a few sentences (presenting concern, personality traits, relevant history) and the platform generates a complete clinical profile with defense mechanisms, nonverbal behaviors, and session dynamics.
